Bike Fort Collins History

Bike Fort Collins (BFC) received its 501(c)(3) non-profit status in September 2005, and is committed to promoting and developing programs that increase bicycle riding in Fort Collins, CO. Members of BFC share the enjoyment of cycling by developing and staffing in-house projects that city cyclists request as well as volunteering at existing cycling events in the area.

BFC embraces a broad range of bicycle-related activities centered on sharing the benefits of a strong cycling community. Such activities include: operating the Fort Collins Bike Library, providing support and partnering with the city of Fort Collins in the local K-12 Safe Routes to School program, and the development of a “museum without walls,” for restored antique bicycles that are then placed on display in merchant shops around the city.

BFC’s 5-year goal is to double the BMR in the city of Fort Collins as measured by CDoT. Bike Fort Collins identified the need in the Fort Collins community for a comprehensive series of 12 monthly programs designed to educate the bicyclist of all ages and skills on how to use the bicycle as a primary mode of transportation in their daily life. BFC believes that the bicycle is the sensible mode of transportation for pleasure rides with the family or short trips to the grocery store; daily commutes to work, and longer multi-day camping trips. Due to a lack of understanding of necessary skills, equipment, and methods of utilizing the bicycle, the general public often fails to view the bicycle as a sensible solution to get from one place to another. The annual Community Cycling School will ensure that more people have the necessary skills to enable them to go by bicycle.

Bike Fort Collins has managed to achieve a substantial amount of success in a very short period of time through creative collaborations with other cycling-oriented groups in Fort Collins and Northern Colorado. In the past two years, BFC played an integral part in the launch of the Fort Collins Bike Library,  monthly Bike Lunch Talks, and was instrumental in updating the Bicycle Plan and Program of the City of Fort Collins. Through our “Community Chat Sessions,” BFC was able to successfully petition the City of Fort Collins for improved street signage, making cycling safer at targeted intersections. Through our extensive network of cyclists, organizations and supporting businesses, we are uniquely qualified to bring a creative series of programs to the public.
