HAVE YOU EXPERIENCED CONFLICT?
In our October issue of The Pedal Post (eNewsletter), Bike Fort Collins posed the question: “Have you experienced conflict, or right-of-way confusion at the intersection of Magnolia Street, Sherwood Street and Canyon Avenue while riding your bike?”
Thank you to those who responded. Below is a recap of the results.
Have you experienced conflict or right-of-way confusion at the intersection of Canyon/Sherwood/Magnolia?
WHAT HAPPENED?
In addition, for those who reported conflict, we asked them to describe their experience. Here is a sampling of the responses we received:
- “1) Vehicles thinking it is a all-way stop, 2) vehicles creeping out way into the intersection to get a view, 3) drives coming off Mulberry and heading NB way too fast while pedestrians are just entering the endless crosswalks“
- “Cars run the stop signs on Magnolia and Sherwood constantly. I have seen many near misses. And the sight-distance at this intersection is terrible, even without anyone parked along the streets. I have also seen cars speed through even when pedestrians are in the crosswalk.”
- “There are too many streets to make sure a bike, car, pedestrian, etc is coming. It’s too much.”
- ” Everyone has too far to pull out to see down the opposite streets.”
- “I stopped because I thought I didn’t have right of way when, in fact, I did.”
HOW CAN IT BE IMPROVED?
Finally, we asked respondents how they thought the intersection/facility could be improved. Here is a sampling of the responses we received:
- “1) Painted and bollard-protected curb extensions to shorten the crossing distance on all legs of the intersection making pedestrians more visible and giving pedestrians a better view; 2) Stop signs for Canyon Ave traffic”
- “A roundabout would significantly improve safety, sigh distance, and make navigating the intersection less anxious for all travelers.”
- “Maybe a round about?”
- “It’s fine. You should direct your attention to serious problems such as the epidemic of curb extensions. Also the condition of College Ave north of Laporte Ave needs attention.”
Again, thank you to all who responded—and for sharing their experiences. Stay tuned for additional surveys inquiring about other intersections and bicycle facilities.
