In our June 2026 issue of The Pedal Post (eNewsletter), Bike Fort Collins posed the question: “Have you experienced conflict or felt unsafe while traveling through the intersection of East Prospect Road and South College Avenue?”
Thank you to those who responded. Below is a recap of the results.
WHAT HAPPENED?
In addition, for those who reported conflict, we asked them to describe their experience. Here is a sampling of the responses we received:
- “It’s a big intersection. As a, cyclist or predestination I prefer to use the underpass to the south or the north.”
- “This intersection leaves cyclists feeling exposed to traffic, its loud, big and even the crosswalks feel dangerous..”
- “I would never consider pedaling through that very busy intersection.”
HOW CAN IT BE IMPROVED?
Finally, we asked respondents how they thought the intersection/facility could be improved. Here is a sampling of the responses we received:
- “Add a pedestrian island in the middle.”
- “I never bike this intersection, because it is so unfriendly to bikes. In practice, this means I always reroute south to the Spring Creek bike trail or north to the tunnel under College. Could we get bike lanes?!?“
- “Fewer lanes of traffic. Protected bike and pedestrian crossings.”
- “It’s a pipe dream, but would love an underpass for the Mason Trail here, or at the very least wider landing pads. it’s such a busy corridor for bikes and people and the cars are so close and so fast.”
- “I would ask “why are you using this intersection on a bike?”. It’s 1 block from the Mason Trail and Remington Bikeway if you’re traveling N/S, and 2 blocks from the Spring Creek Trail for E/W travel. Maybe you can get to your destination from one of these safe bike routes without having to navigate this intersection at all. I think this area has been handled by the City with plenty of bike-friendly/safe options.”
