In our November 2025 issue of The Pedal Post (eNewsletter), Bike Fort Collins posed the question: “Have you experienced conflict or felt unsafe while traveling through the intersection of East Stuart Street and South Lemay Avenue?”
Thank you to those who responded. Below is a recap of the results.

WHAT HAPPENED?
In addition, for those who reported conflict, we asked them to describe their experience. Here is a sampling of the responses we received:
- “Going east a bicyclist can be cut off by a driver turning south.“
- “We cross Lemay on Stuart often. Sharing the turn lane with cars is always treacherous, but especially westbound at this intersection, where cars try to sneak around bikes in the right turn lane.“
- “High rate of speed of cars turning from Stuart to Lemay (trying to make the light) without time to see bikes or pedestrians. Traveling eastbound, cars taking the turn lane into the Ridgeview school regularly cut off bikes in the turn lane. Cars drive far too fast on Stuart as a whole (the entire segment between College and Lemay); it needs several stoplights and calming. Traffic on Lemay is very aggressive.“
- “By having the bike lane as part of the turn lane west bound, car turning right can become impatient and want to scoot by.“
- “Riding east on Stuart to cross Lemay I have had drivers attempt to turn right in front or through me. Despite having front blinking white light and a rear blinking red light as well as wearing hi-visible clothing and helmet some drivers think they have the right-of-way.“
HOW CAN IT BE IMPROVED?
Finally, we asked respondents how they thought the intersection/facility could be improved. Here is a sampling of the responses we received:
- “Maybe put a green bike lane in for bicyclist crossing the intersection going west.“
- “A dedicated bike lane on the eastern side of the intersection (Stuart westbound) that separates the traffic turning right and the traffic going straight.“
- “Must merge with center traffic lane so painting it green so as to notify divers that bikes may be present would be helpful. This is an open intersection with good visibility; striping it for bikes would add safety.“
- “Protect the bike lane and have a merged bike/pedestrian crossing that is protected from cars. Establish protection for bikes and pedestrians around the entrance to Ridgeview. Most of all, the traffic along all of Stuart between College and Lemay needs to be calmed (with additional stop signs), and the intersection at Stuart and Stover is a child death waiting to happen (major school travel corridor).“
- “Have the bike lane part of the straight forward lane. There is less traffic going through the intersection on stuart. Lemay needs a protected bike lane to be usable.“
- “When I’m riding east through this intersection, I use the straight ahead car lane, not the “bike lane”/right-turn lane. Most cars here are going Left or Right,so I stay out of the Right lane and act like a straight ahead vehicle. This isn’t really an intersection improvement suggestion. Or maybe it is!“
- “Right turn lanes (4) similar to those at Timberline and Horsetooth.“
- “Riding on that section of Lemay is a nightmare for me. I avoid it when possible.“
Again, thank you to all who responded—and for sharing their experiences. Stay tuned for additional surveys inquiring about other intersections and bicycle facilities.
