In our November 2025 issue of The Pedal Post (eNewsletter), Bike Fort Collins posed the question: “Have you experienced conflict or felt unsafe while traveling through the intersection of East Vine Drive and Jerome Street?”

Thank you to those who responded. Below is a recap of the results.

WHAT HAPPENED?

In addition, for those who reported conflict, we asked them to describe their experience. Here is a sampling of the responses we received:

  • Westbound transition to Poudre Trail bridge is problematic. Sidewalks are inconsistent.
  • “I work adjacent to this intersection and experience it daily as a cyclist, pedestrian or driver. There are multiple factors that make this intersection unsafe or perceived to be unsafe. There are currently no sidewalks on the north side of Vine Dr, requiring pedestrians to essentially walk in the street or in a poorly maintained shoulder with no separation from traffic. Vehicles travel fast through this section of Vine Dr and spacing between vehicles coming from the four-way stop to the east often makes crossing challenging. Additionally, off-street trail access from the Poudre River Trail is immediately adjacent to a private driveway with no separation and is not aligned with Jerome St. I often see cyclists crossing at different locations and moving into traffic without stopping or slowing down to cross Vine Dr. Site lines were also obscured by the fencing on the NE corner until it was recently removed.”

    HOW CAN IT BE IMPROVED?

Finally, we asked respondents how they thought the intersection/facility could be improved. Here is a sampling of the responses we received:

    • Left lane turn pocket for bikes much like those at the Trial Gardens on Remington. Also, ask the city where this segment of sidewalk ranks as a missing gap? Flashing beacon might help, but reducing lane width to make room for the turn pocket could reduce speed.
    • Sidewalks and bicycle facilities should be extended through this corridor similar to what exists to the east with separated walks and at a minimum consistent bike lanes. Realignment of the trail access will be more challenging, but should be evaluated.

Again, thank you to all who responded—and for sharing their experiences. Stay tuned for additional surveys inquiring about other intersections and bicycle facilities.
