In our June 2025 issue of The Pedal Post (eNewsletter), Bike Fort Collins posed the question: “Have you experienced conflict or felt unsafe while traveling through the intersection of North Sheilds Street and Laporte Avenue?”

Thank you to those who responded. Below is a recap of the results.

WHAT HAPPENED?

In addition, for those who reported conflict, we asked them to describe their experience. Here is a sampling of the responses we received:

  • The curve in the street makes using the west side hard to see as both a cyclist going south and a pedestrian going north/south/east.”
  • Auto speed through the intersection, pay little attention to the light and often turn in front of riders (especially when riding east/west).
  • Not enough room on the road for bikes and also cars.

    HOW CAN IT BE IMPROVED?

Finally, we asked respondents how they thought the intersection/facility could be improved. Here is a sampling of the responses we received:

    • Overall most streets can be improved by having police actually enforce not parking in bike lanes. Parking enforcement is great, but a very small department.”
    • Lights for left turns.”
    • Enforcement of speed and light laws especially on Shields.”
    • Add poles to indure that cars stay off the bike lane.”

Again, thank you to all who responded—and for sharing their experiences. Stay tuned for additional surveys inquiring about other intersections and bicycle facilities.
