In our June 2025 issue of The Pedal Post (eNewsletter), Bike Fort Collins posed the question: “Have you experienced conflict or felt unsafe while traveling through the intersection of West Horsetooth Road and South Shields Street?”
Thank you to those who responded. Below is a recap of the results.
WHAT HAPPENED?
In addition, for those who reported conflict, we asked them to describe their experience. Here is a sampling of the responses we received:
- “First of all, if I do take that intersection, I always take the sidewalks and never the bike lanes. Within the last week, I was coming home from dropping my kids off at swim team at Westfield, heading back East towards our house near Tradition & Horsetooth – The car in the turn lane across the intersection could see that I was coming with the walk sign. However, there were about seven other cars behind that person laying on the horn, irritated that that person wasn’t turning. I finally passed through the intersection and wildly waved at every single car that honked – hello! I’m HERE! Do you see the cyclist?.”
- “On multiple occasions, while headed west on Horsetooth, conflict with cars turning right has been a close call. Either cutting in front of me, or too close behind me.“
- “Distracted drivers driving fast.“
HOW CAN IT BE IMPROVED?
Finally, we asked respondents how they thought the intersection/facility could be improved. Here is a sampling of the responses we received:
- “There needs to be some drastic traffic calming measures at this intersection. Also, since it is close to my home – in the 6 years we have lived here, I have seen five major accidents at this intersection, two fairly recently.”
- “Better lane markings – more green, etc.”
Again, thank you to all who responded—and for sharing their experiences. Stay tuned for additional surveys inquiring about other intersections and bicycle facilities.
