In our December 2023 issue of The Pedal Post (eNewsletter), Bike Fort Collins posed the question: “Have you experienced conflict or felt unsafe while traveling through the intersection of South College Avenue and Monroe Drive?”
Thank you to those who responded. Below is a recap of the results.
WHAT HAPPENED?
In addition, for those who reported conflict, we asked them to describe their experience. Here is a sampling of the responses we received:
- “I have always avoided this intersection because of the heavy traffic and bike lanes that merge with traffic turning off of College ave. There are frequent close calls when driving so this is a no go for cycling in my mind.”
HOW CAN IT BE IMPROVED?
Finally, we asked respondents how they thought the intersection/facility could be improved. Here is a sampling of the responses we received:
- “Make signs for alternative routes for cyclists. Swallow would be my recommended alternative route. It is still a busy intersection but has much better visibility for cars and bikes as well as large clear bike lanes that line up well.”
- “A longer light for Monroe traffic to cross College.”
- “A bike lane on Monroe on west side of College. Drivers wanting to turn south on College seem to get impatient when I’m waiting to proceed through east on Monroe.”
- “It’s fine.”
Again, thank you to all who responded—and for sharing their experiences. Stay tuned for additional surveys inquiring about other intersections and bicycle facilities.
