In our August 2026 issue of The Pedal Post (eNewsletter), Bike Fort Collins posed the question: “Have you experienced conflict or felt unsafe while traveling through the intersection of Mason Trail and Springcreek Trail.?”

Thank you to those who responded. Below is a recap of the results.

WHAT HAPPENED?

In addition, for those who reported conflict, we asked them to describe their experience. Here is a sampling of the responses we received:

  • “The majority of cyclists going on both trails do not pay attention to the stop signs, which makes it very dangerous on the Mason Trail when a cyclist zooms out of the tunnel.”
  • “Westbound Spring Creek Trail users rarely stop when emerging from the tunnel. North & South Mason Trail users don’t stop much, either. (In my observations.) I don’t know how often there’s a crash here, but it seems a ripe situation for one!“
  • “I’ve nearly had collisions with cyclists making wide, and sometimes high speed, turns at that intersection.”
  • “Not everyone is careful coming into or going through the underpass there. It has improved a bit with the stop signs.”
  • “Traffic from the east on spring creek trail cannot see traffic on mason trail coming out of the railroad underpass, nor can riders on mason trail see people coming out from the underpass.”
  • “Other bike. it is always scary when I go through that intersection from the tunnel or into the tunnel.”
  • “When riding through the underpass on Spring Creek Trail there is no line of sight to either the south or north until entering the Mason Trail. The same situation affects Mason Trail users as they come into the intersection with the Spring Creek Trail. Despite there being stop signs in both directions on the Mason Trail and westbound Spring Creek Trail most users don’t stop. I have fortunately avoided a collision at this intersection.”
  • “No visibility of cyclists coming out of the tunnel. Bikes traveling downhill from the southwest not slowing down just in case.”

    HOW CAN IT BE IMPROVED?

Finally, we asked respondents how they thought the intersection/facility could be improved. Here is a sampling of the responses we received:

    • “Move the Mason Trail west and widen the intersect so that there is full view into the tunnel from the Mason Trail.”
    • “f it’s possible to utilize some of the roadway just west of the underpass, move the intersection out here. And maybe make it a roundabout?“
    • “There seems to be ample space immediately adjacent to that intersection to increase the amount of pavement for turns. A redesign of the intersections would be in order.”
    • “Having a signal of some kind in the underpass? A sound, a light that blinks?“
    • “It’s all bikes here. I’d focus on intersections with cars.”
    • “More space between the underpass exit and the actual intersection of the two trails to give everyone some time to see traffic.”
    • “Roundabout.”
    • “Either move the intersection west 25′ or more to increase the sight lines or develop a trail user roundabout.”
    • “Bring the intersection away from the tunnel. Make a bicycle roundabout so traffic going into the tunnel approaches from the southwest and traffic coming out of the tunnel moves to the northwest.”

Again, thank you to all who responded—and for sharing their experiences. Stay tuned for additional surveys inquiring about other intersections and bicycle facilities.
