In our July 2026 issue of The Pedal Post (eNewsletter), Bike Fort Collins posed the question: “Have you experienced conflict or felt unsafe while traveling through the intersection of East Prospect Road and South College Avenue?”
Thank you to those who responded. Below is a recap of the results.
WHAT HAPPENED?
In addition, for those who reported conflict, we asked them to describe their experience. Here is a sampling of the responses we received:
- “For bicyclists on Whedbee (north and south), there is a bike lane, and the traffic sensor “sees” a bike there. I don’t think this is an intersection to try to exercise the Colorado Safety Stop Law – just wait for the light to change (and take a look at Mulberry to make sure all traffic has stopped!), then be on your way.”
- “I like using the Whedbee (and Remington) bike lane(s) since they are well marked and a signaled crossing of Mulberry is needed during busy hours. I have had incidents in the mornings where cars continue through the intersection after the Mulberry light is red and the Whedbee light is green. Traffic is typically eastbound, so there may be glare issues from the rising sun.”
- “Vehicles running red lights regularly.”
- “The people turning right in the northbound Whedbee lane. No good spot for a bike to wait and let them turn right/eastbound onto Mulberry. Does not seem to be a problem for vehicles southbound on Whedbee traveling west on Mulberry.”
- “Cars and too short of a light.”
- “Vehicles travelling at high rate of speed and running through red lights.“
- “The light cycle is too short for Whedbee, and the wait is far longer. Drivers also don’t pay attention turning right onto either street but especially onto Mulberry.”
- “Heavy traffic at high speeds.”
- “Never felt unsafe.”
HOW CAN IT BE IMPROVED?
Finally, we asked respondents how they thought the intersection/facility could be improved. Here is a sampling of the responses we received:
- “I don’t think there’s any change needed to this intersection.”
- “Traffic calming on Mulberry may be appropriate, this is a long straight stretch of road, and a driver may “zone out” and miss the traffic signal, especially driving towards the sun. Maybe a flasher on the eastbound redlight during sunrise hours. Curb extensions could improve east/west pedestrian traffic, but the problems I have seen involve the fast Mulberry traffic.”
- “I really don’t know. Roundabout? Under/overpass? Make Mulberry underground from College to Riverside?“
- “Dedicated bike lane to allow drivers to turn right on red. Might be nice to have a flashing light like the prospect and stover crossing.”
- “Longer light for whedbee and delay the left turns by cars somehow.“
- “eed some traffic calming tools and more visible lights when pedestrians and cyclists are crossing Mulberry.”
- “Island, longer light, extended corners.”
- “Ideally reduced speed limit that is camera enforced. Separated bike lanes on mulberry and a pedestrian/bike priority crossing signal.“
- “This is already a safe intersection.”
