In our April 2026 issue of The Pedal Post (eNewsletter), Bike Fort Collins posed the question: “Have you experienced conflict or felt unsafe while traveling through the intersection of East Stuart Street and South Lemay Avenue?”

Thank you to those who responded. Below is a recap of the results.

WHAT HAPPENED?

In addition, for those who reported conflict, we asked them to describe their experience. Here is a sampling of the responses we received:

  • Especially in the morning, folks are eager to get to Ridgeview or onto Lemay. People can be pushy in a car!
  • Hard to know the safest spot for the bicyclist without blocking cars.”
  • I feel safe enough going eastbound on Stuart, but there is no dedicated bike lane at the intersection traveling westbound on Stuart. Then to hop up on the sidewalk and push the button spits you out on a curb, not a ramp. Classic.”

    HOW CAN IT BE IMPROVED?

Finally, we asked respondents how they thought the intersection/facility could be improved. Here is a sampling of the responses we received:

    • I think the real culprit is traffic volume and speeds on Stuart. It seems like people who don’t want to use Prospect or Drake as the east-west arterials they are use Stuart as a cut-through. My wife works at a pre-school on Stuart and they routinely have people blow by the crosswalk at Brookhaven when their classes are trying to cross Stuart to get to Indian Hills park. They have campaigned the city for a school zone sign and flashing beacons, thus far unsuccessfully. In short, I think traffic behavior on Stuart is leading to problems at this intersection.
    • Perhaps a bike box.
    • Let the bike signal give a couple of second head start like the timberline/Vermont signal ( for example).
    • Dedicated westbound Stuart bike lane at intersection. Or “rampier” sidewalk corners with less curb-age.

Again, thank you to all who responded—and for sharing their experiences. Stay tuned for additional surveys inquiring about other intersections and bicycle facilities.
