On Wednesday, March 18, Bike Fort Collins joined more than 50 bicycle advocates from across the state at the Colorado State Capitol for Safe Streets Day, an important day of coordinated advocacy focused on advancing traffic safety legislation. Participants met directly with their elected officials to share personal experiences and highlight the urgent need for policies that better protect people who bike and walk on Colorado’s roadways.

Throughout the day, Bike Fort Collins engaged in productive, solutions-oriented conversations with legislators, emphasizing support for three priority bills:

Senate Bill 26-072 – Increase Penalties for Vehicular Homicide and Assault: Strengthens accountability for dangerous driving behaviors that result in serious injury or loss of life.

House Bill 26-1237 – Transportation Safety Modifications: Establishes clearer protections for bike lane access by prohibiting obstruction and updates statutory language to replace “accident” with “crash,” reflecting a more accurate understanding of traffic incidents.

House Bill 26-1318 – Traffic Safety Near Schools: Enhances protections for students by establishing a minimum 1,000-foot school zone boundary to improve safety near educational facilities.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the event sponsors—Bicycle Colorado, AAA Colorado, ColoBikeLaw.com, It Could Be Me, Lime Micromobility, and Shift Events—whose support made this day of advocacy possible.

Efforts like Safe Streets Day are critical to advancing meaningful policy change. Through continued collaboration and engagement, we are working to create safer, more accessible streets for all Coloradans.
