In our March 2026 issue of The Pedal Post (eNewsletter), Bike Fort Collins posed the question: “Have you experienced conflict or felt unsafe while traveling through the intersection of South Loomis Avenue/Meridian Avenue and West Laurel Street?”
Thank you to those who responded. Below is a recap of the results.

WHAT HAPPENED?
In addition, for those who reported conflict, we asked them to describe their experience. Here is a sampling of the responses we received:
- “This intersection is especially problematic for bicyclists after a CSU game (football, volleyball, and men’s or women’s basketball). My unofficial observations are that a majority of car traffic going north out of campus at this intersection are turning right (east) onto Laurel. (Especially after a game.) And a majority of bike traffic here is going straight (to continue north on Loomis). Most bicyclists honor the painted infrastructure and stay in the bike lane (on the right side of Meridian). Most right-turning motorists use a combination of the straight-ahead lane and the bike lane to position themselves for a right-turn (in anticipation of turning right on red). Personally, when I use this intersection as a northbound bicyclist, I just get in the middle of the straight-ahead travel lane and leave plenty of room on my right for a right-turning vehicle. I’ve witnessed a variety of car & bike behaviors here, there’s no real standard to account for this particular flow.”
HOW CAN IT BE IMPROVED?
Finally, we asked respondents how they thought the intersection/facility could be improved. Here is a sampling of the responses we received:
- “Seems to function reasonably well as-is.“
- “I think some new infrastructure paint could be beneficial here to bring straight-ahead bicyclists to the left of the right-turning vehicles.”
Again, thank you to all who responded—and for sharing their experiences. Stay tuned for additional surveys inquiring about other intersections and bicycle facilities.
