In our May 2024 issue of The Pedal Post (eNewsletter), Bike Fort Collins posed the question: “Have you experienced conflict or felt unsafe while traveling through the intersection of South Meldrum Street and West Laurel Street?”

Thank you to those who responded. Below is a recap of the results.

WHAT HAPPENED?

In addition, for those who reported conflict, we asked them to describe their experience. Here is a sampling of the responses we received:

  • When traveling east from the CSU bike path, you end up on the wrong side of the street for going north on Meldrum. In order to proceed, I either have to travel diagonally across the intersection or take the pedestrian crossing to the east side and then the pedestrian crossing across Laurel to get onto Meldrum. This option can be difficult when there are multiple bikes and pedestrians in all directions. And cars traveling north through the intersection are not expecting bikes to cross in front of them. It is confusing and scary.”

HOW CAN IT BE IMPROVED?

Finally, we asked respondents how they thought the intersection/facility could be improved. Here is a sampling of the responses we received:

  • Don’t allow right turn on red and give cyclists a few seconds to begin to pass through the intersection before motorists.”
  • Clearly mark routes and incorporate them into the traffic light cycle for going from the CSU bike path to northbound Meldrum and eastbound Laurel.”
  • Seems like a well designed intersection. Thank you.”

Again, thank you to all who responded—and for sharing their experiences. Stay tuned for additional surveys inquiring about other intersections and bicycle facilities.
